October is Black History Month in the UK, where we reflect on the resilience, contributions and stories of Black individuals. It’s also a time to renew our commitment to recognise Black history and work to build a more inclusive world all year round.
This year's theme is Standing Firm in Power and Pride, and it explores the ways Black individuals have impacted the world today.
We're sharing ideas on how you can learn more and get involved with Black History Month, whether that's through watching a show or attending an event.
Film and TV
- Three Little Birds (available on ITVX) - a drama series written by Sir Lenny Henry, which follows three sisters as they travel from Jamaica to start a new life in 1950s England. It explores themes of immigration, racism and community.
- A United Kingdom (available on Netflix) - a film based on the true story of a marriage between an English woman and Botswana's royal heir, as they fight against racial and political barriers to be together.
- Black and British: A Forgotten History (available on BBC iPlayer) - a documentary series providing important insights into the history of Black people in Britain and its colonies.
