Guide to the PSW visa for international students

Postgraduate Returning to university

The PSW visa is a work permit that allows international students who’ve just graduated from university to stay in the UK and find employment. This visa is a great way for graduates to kickstart their careers in the UK, and is commonly known as the ‘Graduate Route’ or ‘Graduate Route visa’.

Here, we’ll explore what the PSW visa is, what the benefits are, and whether you’re eligible. Keep reading to find out.

What is a PSW visa or ‘Graduate visa’?

A post-study work (PSW) visa, also known as a ‘graduate visa’ in the UK, is available to international students who have successfully completed an undergraduate or master's degree. The PSW visa is valid for up to two years whereas PhD graduates can stay for up to three years.

Who is eligible for a PSW visa?

The official UK government website details the eligibility criteria for a PSW visa, but there are some basic requirements.

  • You must currently reside in the UK
  • Your current visa is a student visa or a Tier 4 (General) student visa
  • You studied a UK bachelor's degree, postgraduate degree or other eligible courses for a minimum period of time with your student visa
  • Your university or college has told the Home Office that you’ve successfully completed your course

To be eligible for the PSW visa, you must pass certain security, identity and criminality checks and have never been granted a PSW visa before.

Plus, you need to pay the required PSW visa fees, which include the application fee of £822 and the Immigration Health Surcharge of £1,035 for each year you’ll be in the UK.

How to apply for a PSW visa in the UK

You can apply for a PSW visa on the UK government website with an online application. You’ll need to prove your identity and provide certain supporting documents, including the ones listed below.

  • A valid passport or other travel document showing your identity and nationality
  • Your biometric residence permit (BRP) if you were given one when you applied for your student visa or Tier 4 (General) student visa
  • Your Confirmation of Acceptance (CAS) reference number

If you received a scholarship or sponsorship then you may need to provide evidence from your sponsor.

When should you apply for a PSW visa?

You should apply for a PSW visa before your student visa or Tier 4 (General) student visa expires.

How long does it take to get a PSW visa? A final decision can take up to eight weeks, and it could be delayed if your supporting documents need further verification. Therefore, we suggest starting the application three months before your student visa expires.

Your PSW visa starts on the day your application is approved.

What can you do with a PSW visa?

A PSW visa allows you to work in the UK. This includes undertaking paid or unpaid work, being self-employed or engaging in voluntary work. The only restriction placed on a PSW visa is that you’re not allowed to work as a professional sportsperson.

What’s great about the PSW visa in the UK is that you don’t have to work while on the visa - it’s designed to help graduates look for and undertake work in the UK. You don’t need to have a job offer to be eligible to apply.
