Wondering how to make new friends at uni? It’s easier than you think

Moving to a new city for university can be strange. Not only are you navigating classes, but you're also trying to make friends in a completely new environment. If you feel a bit anxious, know that it's totally normal. And if you feel isolated at first, you're definitely not alone – around one in four people at uni say they've felt lonely, which is why it's more important than ever to extend a friendly hand to those around you.

Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to make new friends and build your social circle at university. Here are five tips to help you connect with mates without feeling awkward or forced.

Go to your fresher's events

Socialising with a group of strangers can be nerve wracking, but it’s worth remembering that you’re all in the same boat. One of the best ways to meet people and make friends at university is to attend freshers' events. They are designed to help new people get to know one another, so what have you got to lose? You could meet people with similar interests and backgrounds on day one.

Say hi to your neighbours

There's no better place to start making friends than right outside your door. Whether you live in student halls or an apartment, chances are there will be plenty of fellow students living nearby who share similar interests as yourself - take some time to introduce yourself and get chatting. You’ll also meet people in the common areas just hanging out, or at any events organised by your residence.

Go out and find your people

One of the easiest ways to meet people and make new friends at university is to join local student groups or societies. Whether you’re into sports, drama or animal rights, you’ll find groups you can chill with and get active in.

At iQ, you can join the iQ clubs community, so whether you're a gamer, a chef or a true crime fan, you can connect with people who are into the same things.

Take a city break

You might not have the cash for a full city break, but whether taking in some of London's most iconic free sights or a train ride down to the coast, a quick uni break is a great way to get to know people better and soak up the best of the UK. Don't be afraid to take the initiative here by organising the trip and getting people on board.

Use your student discounts

Tons of places in London offer special discounts or promotions for university students – so why not take advantage? From cinemas offering discounted tickets on certain days of the week to clubs offering free entry before 11 pm, having your student card handy ensures you can get out and about without splurging too much cash – and you can invite people to join you.

Have fun chatting with someone new, and don't forget that if this is your first time living in London, exploring the city can be as much fun as making friends – so don't forget to enjoy every moment of being here.
