Important info before you arrive in the UK

Moving to the UK is an exciting step, but there are lots of things you need to remember before you arrive. To help make the journey to the UK as smooth as possible, we’ve created a quick guide with all the essentials you’ll need, documents you’ll have to get, mobile services and more.

Documents to prepare when applying for a UK student visa

  1. Valid Passport - ensure your passport is valid for the entire duration of your planned stay in the UK

  2. Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) - provided by your UK university or college

  3. Bank Statement - or other financial documents showing you have enough money to cover your tuition fees and living expenses

  4. Proof of English Proficiency - such as IELTS score sheets

  5. Tuberculosis Test Certificate - applicable to students from certain countries

We recommend starting your preparations early and carefully checking the required documents to avoid any delays in your visa application.

Healthcare when staying in the UK

International students have access to the UK’s NHS (National Health Service) through the Immigration Health Surcharge paid as part of your visa. This means most medical appointments are free, but you’ll still need to pay for dental treatment, eye care and prescriptions medication.

Once you arrive, make sure you register with a GP near your accommodation so you can book appointments when you need them.

For help:

  • GP surgery – everyday health issues

  • NHS 111 – 24/7 advice if you’re unsure where to go

  • A&E/999 – emergencies only

The main mobile operators in the UK include:

  • EE

  • O2

  • Three

  • Vodafone

After arriving in the UK, you’ll need to purchase a local SIM card to send calls and messages. There are other options available, each with different plans, so it’s worth looking around to find something that suits you. A lot of providers also offer student discounts, so be sure to ask about them when purchasing.
