iQ BookClub’s author Q&A event

Events iQ life

Ever wished you could have a chat with real, published authors? With iQ BookClub, you can! Last week, we invited Lauren Bravo (author of The Second Chance Store, Preloved and Probably Nothing) and Eva Verde (author of Lives Like Mine, In Bloom and Them Girls) to iQ for a Q&A on what it’s like to be an author. We loved listening to their stories, asking them questions and learning their top writing tips.

We heard all about how Lauren and Eva became authors, with Lauren starting off as a journalist and Eva going back to school to study writing.

The authors shared some home-truths about how writing is not a perfect process, and there’s often lots of editing and restructuring throughout. This is a great point to remember when it comes to your own writing, whether that’s a uni essay or your very own own novel in progress…

We also picked up some tips on how to fit a writing habit into your day. Lauren used to write every morning as the first thing she did, while Eva tries to fit it in wherever works for her on a given day. Even if it’s only 25 mins in bed before you go to sleep, it’s better than nothing. Our authors told us it doesn’t always need to be a big, structured exercise.

After the Q&A, Eva and Lauren kindly signed free books for each guest to take away with them. All the great conversations had people feeling a bit peckish - luckily, we had drinks, pizzas and even iQBookClub donuts on hand.

We caught up with a few of you to hear how you found the event:

“I really liked having an opportunity to peek behind the curtain of a book”

“I’d say [the highlight was] definitely just hearing the whole perspective of the writing process and how they come up with the ideas for their books”

"It changed the way I think about writing”
