Newcastle is a vibrant city in the north east of England, and home to both Newcastle University and Northumbria University. There's plenty of entertainment too. Here's our guide to what's on the doorstep of Collingwood and Stephenson House.
World Head Quarters – 6 minute walk
Newcastle’s underground nightclub covers two floors, and offers an array of musical genres throughout the week. They pride themselves on being open-minded and welcoming to all, as well as Newcastle's longest-running underground club.
Cineworld Newcastle – 6 minute walk
Close to iQ is Cineworld, offering the latest movies throughout the year with a friendly student atmosphere. This is probably due to the fact that they offer both student and group discounts, and are located close to a wide range of bars.
Leazes Park – 10 minute walk
Leazes Park is a popular choice for morning and evening workouts amongst students. You could also rent a boat and row around the lake, grab a coffee at the Tower Café or simply wander around the beautiful park.
Quayside – 6 minute walk
Take a short walk into Newcastle city centre or down to the Quayside and you’ll find a range of different restaurants. From street food served up from market stalls on the Quayside Market, to hidden gems such as Dabbawal - an Indian restaurant located in Jesmond. You´ll also find all your favourite quick bites like Five Guys, Nandos and lots more, right on the doorstep of iQ Collingwood.
Nancy's Bordello - 3 minute walk
Fancy a couple of pints with your flatmates? Look no further than Nancy’s Bordello, a kitsch bar with flowery wallpaper, tasselled lampshades, sofas, free pool table and an outdoor terrace. This is the place to unwind or start the party.
Alvinos Bar - 4 minute walk
Alvinos is an award-winning cocktail and craft beer bar in the heart of Newcastle. Its laid-back vibe, booth seating and international menu make it the ideal place to start a night out. They have a secret urban terrace, foosball, pinball, and live DJs at the weekend.
As You Like It - 10 minute walk
A modern, alternative restaurant with a garden terrace which makes it perfect for dinner and drinks in the summer. Set over three sprawling floors and considered ‘the most beautiful bar in Newcastle’, it guarantees a different experience to your standard meal.
Where to begin? Newcastle is renowned for its shopping centres. Within a 10-minute walk you have Eldon Square which boasts over 150 different bespoke and high street shops. There’s also a wide range of restaurants, from Chatime to Ask Italian.
If that’s not enough for you, catch the 5-minute train to the world-famous Metro Centre, Europe’s largest shopping centre with more than 340 different retailers. Spoilt for choice, right?
While Newcastle University is within a 15-minute walk of iQ Collingwood, Northumbria University is less than 5 minutes away. We can actually see it from of our front door – the ideal location to just roll out of bed and straight into class.
Newcastle is famous for hosting the UK’s only underground Metro system outside London, and the Manors stop is about 1 minute from us. It will take you directly into the city centre with just one stop – around a 45-second journey.
And if you like looking out the window, there are various bus routes that stop 1 minute away, including 12, 22, 39, 40, 62 and 63. Make sure you check out Newcastle’s Bus Transport for times and routes.
Your iQ team will be happy to help you get to know Newcastle better, so please ask at Reception if you need any help. And if you find somewhere in town that you think everyone else should know about, let us know on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using hashtag #MyiQLife
