City Guide: Newcastle

Newcastle is a vibrant city in the north east of England. With fantastic universities and colleges, as well as great entertainment options, Newcastle is the place to be if you’re a student.

Our property iQ Stephenson House is a quick journey away from the city centre, and close to both Newcastle University and Northumbria University. In a more central location you'll find iQ Collingwood, close to the River Tyne and within walking distance of the universities' campuses.

• World Head Quarters – 6 minute walk
Newcastle’s underground nightclub is situated over two floors, and offers an array of musical genres throughout the week. They pride themselves on being open-minded and welcoming to all, as well as Newcastle's longest-running underground club.

• Cineworld Newcastle – 6 minute walk
Close to both buildings is Cineworld, offering the latest movies throughout the year with a friendly student atmosphere. This is probably due to the fact that they offer both student and group discounts, and are located close to a wide range of bars.

• Leazes Park – 10 minute walk
Located only 10 minutes from iQ Stephenson House and under 15 minutes from iQ Collingwood, Leazes Park is a popular choice for morning and evening workouts amongst students. You could also rent a boat and row around the lake, grab a coffee at the Tower Café or simply wander around the beautiful park.

Food & Drink

• Quayside – 6 minute walk

Fancy a couple of pints with your flatmates? Look no further than Nancy’s Bordello, a kitsch bar with flowery wallpaper, tasselled lampshades, sofas, free pool table and an outdoor terrace. Less than 10 minutes’ walking distance from both houses, this is the place to unwind or start the party.

• Alvinos Bar - 4 minute walk
Alvinos is an award-winning cocktail and craft beer bar in the heart of Newcastle. Its laid-back vibe, booth seating and international menu make it the ideal place to start a night out. They have a secret urban terrace, foosball, pinball, and live DJs at the weekend.

Where to begin? Newcastle is renowned for its shopping centres. Within a 10-minute walk you have Eldon Square which boasts over 150 different bespoke and high street shops. There’s also a wide range of restaurants, from Chatime to Ask Italian.

If that’s not enough for you, catch the 5-minute train to the world-famous Metro Centre, Europe’s largest shopping centre with more than 340 different retailers. You’re simply spoilt for choice!

While Newcastle University is within a 10-minute walk of iQ Collingwood, Northumbria University is located less than 2 minutes away. We can actually see it from of our front door – the ideal location to just roll out of bed and straight into class!

From iQ Stephenson House, it’s 19 minutes’ walk to Newcastle University and only 13 minutes to Northumbria’s city campus.

Newcastle is famous for hosting the UK’s only underground Metro system outside London, and we’ve got stations less than 3 minutes’ walk from both of our front doors. From iQ Collingwood, this will take you directly into the city centre with just 1 stop – around a 45-second journey.

If the Metro ain’t your thing, there are various bus routes that stop 1 minute away. These include: 12, 22, 39, 40, 62, & 63. Make sure you check out Newcastle’s Bus Transport for times and routes.
