Checking out: all you need to know

For a hassle-free exit, take a look at our guide to checking out.

Before you check out…

Do I need to book a move out inspection?

Yes, we recommend you book an inspection with a member of our team for the day you intend to return your key to us.

Most of our residents will leave the accommodation around the same time, so we encourage you to book your inspection in advance so you can check out when you want. Please contact the site team as soon as possible to arrange your inspection – we’ll do our best to carry it out at a convenient time.

Appointments will be on a first come, first served basis. Be sure to clear and clean your room and communal areas thoroughly.

How do I pay any outstanding balances on my account?

To avoid deductions from your deposit, you can pay any outstanding rent or recharges by visiting the accounts section of your resident portal. Alternatively, if you visit us at Reception we can take payment in person and clear your balance.

Do I need to clean the communal areas?

Yes, you will need to ensure your room and any shared areas are left in good, clean condition. Even if there are residents still living there, all areas of the flat will be inspected when your key is returned. A cleaning checklist is available here for you to use, or you can request one from Reception.

If you and your flatmates don’t feel up to the big clean, why not book in a clean with PingLocker and split the cost? (London only), find out more here

Remember to remove all items from communal areas – including from fridges and cupboards - to avoid removal charges. We’ll be working with British Heart Foundation and Barnardo’s to donate any unwanted items, so please bring anything you wish to give away down to Reception.

There’s damage in the flat, will I be charged for it?

Any communal damages won’t be investigated at this time - unless a resident admits liability - and recharges will be divided equally amongst all residents of the flat as per the tenancy agreement. We recommend you discuss any damages with your flatmates prior to leaving.

For further information on recharges, including amounts, please review the iQ resident handbook.

There’s damage in my room, what should I do?

It’s best to be proactive to avoid any surprise charges for damages. Report any repairs or damage as soon as possible so we can fix it and discuss whether there will be any charges. You can log any repairs via the maintenance section of your resident portal.

You may have the option to replace items yourself and avoid any charges, but do check with the site team first before carrying out tasks/replacements yourself.

Will I be charged for leaving items in my room?

iQ will recharge the disposal cost of any items left behind, so it’s advisable to clear everything from your room and/or flat when you leave.

When you check out…

What time do I have to check out of my room?

Final checkout is 10am on the day your tenancy terminates. Some of our sites may have a later checkout time if university contracts state this. If you’re unsure then check your tenancy agreement or consult your local iQ team.

How do I return my keys?

You’ll need to hand them in to a member of the team at Reception, or put them in an envelope with your name and room number on and pop it in the key box. Please note that not all sites offer a key box return. If you are leaving out of hours then check arrangements with the site team first. Don’t leave keys under Reception doors or in your room.

Please note any keys not returned will incur replacement charges. Once keys are returned you’re agreeing to the site team inspecting the room, and also to any recharges that are found. Any charges raised will be deducted from your deposit.

Can I use the car park for checkout?

Yes, we’ll permit access to car parks where feasible, for unloading purposes only, and this will be subject to time restrictions. We won’t be able to permit overnight parking unless agreed and paid for ahead of time; check with your local iQ team for further details.

How do I get to the airport/train station?

We’re happy to order you a taxi at reception, and some iQ sites have deals with local taxi firms. If you need other transport advice then pop down to Reception and we’ll be happy to help.

After you check out…

What happens to any post or parcels after I check out?

We don’t accept or forward on any parcels for residents that have moved. We’ll return any items to sender so be sure to inform friends, relatives and important companies of your new address. The Royal Mail offer a redirection service for a charge, which will redirect your post to an address of your choice; just visit the Royal Mail website or your local post office for more details.

Please remember to collect any parcels you have waiting at Reception before you return your keys.

Can I store items at iQ over the summer?

Unfortunately we don’t permit storage over the summer but iQ has teamed up with PingLocker. To find out about their clever packing, moving and storage services for iQ residents, click here.

Can I store my bike over the summer?

No, you’ll need to take your bike with you when you leave. Any abandoned bikes will be disposed of, recycled or given to charity.

What if I forget any of my belongings?

Be sure to remove all items from your accommodation, no matter how small. We recommend that any useful items, in good condition and working order, be recycled or gifted to charity – you’ll find collection points around your site.

Staying longer

Can I extend my stay?

Yes, you can extend your stay into the summer by booking the additional period via our Summer Stays page. You can check availability at your site here.

Can I rebook again for next year?

We hate to see our residents leave and would love for you to choose iQ as your home for next year. If you fancy staying with us again then please click here. Alternatively, you can visit us at Reception so we can chat through your options.
