Student city guide to Plymouth

With over 20,000 people studying at the University of Plymouth alone, the city has a great student scene. The student union is legendary, with its famed weekly open mic night. The likes of Frank Turner, Pendulum and Dizzee Rascal have all played at the venue in recent years.

Their end-of-year summer ball is also a massive deal, with previous artists including Professor Green, Sub Focus, Ella Eyre and You Me At Six. Outside of the uni, MTV recently partnered with the local council to host a series of new music events in the city.

"All tastes are catered to for Plymouth’s many students"

Plymouth’s seaside location has made it influential in the field of marine conservation and studies. It’s home to the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom, and its National Marine Aquarium is a key local attraction. The waterfront areas include pretty marinas, the Tinside Lido with its stunning views out to sea and the 17th Century Royal Citadel. There are a lot of options for trips out of the city, with beautiful coastal walks and many wonderful beaches nearby plus Dartmoor National Park. It’s also a surfing hotspot.

With loads of nightlife and events in town, a growing food and drink scene that makes the most of outstanding fresh seafood, and several major music festivals across the summer, all tastes are catered to for Plymouth’s many students.

Our Astor House building gives sea views from its central location and is a short walk from Plymouth University and Plymouth College of Art. It features a games room, a Sky lounge, bike storage and even surfboard storage for those wanting to catch some waves.
