Recognised as one of Europe’s leading higher education institutions in its field, Glasgow School of Art has been a key part of the city’s culture since its inception in 1845. Its studio-based approach to teaching and research fosters an inter-disciplinary approach to problem solving, encouraging collaboration, experimentation and critical enquiry in areas such as architecture, sustainability and digital visualisation.
The GSA’s alumni list is impressive and diverse, with many going on to make use of their creative talents in the industry and the wider creative arts. Among the best-known are actors Robbie Coltrane and Peter Capaldi, and several members of Travis and Franz Ferdinand, although even they would have to defer to the GSA’s most famous son, the celebrated artist, architect and designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
The undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral degrees offered by the Glasgow School of Art cover disciplines including fashion design, interior design, virtual reality and 3D modelling. A strong international exchange programme, supported by relationships with around 80 art, design and architecture schools worldwide, offers students the chance to study abroad, and the GSA also fosters links locally, encouraging young creatives to develop their talents through short courses, and staging regular exhibitions and events, open to all.
Just a 3-minute walk away, iQ’s Glasgow site, Elgin Place, makes a convenient base for Glasgow School of Art students. Featuring its own creative studio, DJ space, amphitheatre and onsite gym, it aims to provide inspiring surroundings – not least from its outstanding city-view roof terrace.
