It's your move: Jake

It's your move: Jake

We’ve spoken to students across the country who made the move to iQ. Here, we meet Jake, a Film Studies student at the University of Sheffield who chose iQ Fenton House as his base in the city.

What were you proud of achieving at university so far?

I’d say that I’m most proud of the skills I have learnt so quickly on my course. I started the year as a film student with no practical skills. But thanks to the freedom and space that university can offer, I’ve had the ability to focus on the areas I was weakest at, such as editing.

What are you planning to do after university?

My plans after university are to move abroad and find my way into the film industry. I believe moving to Fenton House has been a good transition from moving from a rural area to a small city.

What did you do in your spare time at university?

I threw myself into university societies such as trying lacrosse and making music.

What did you discover in Sheffield?

I found that Sheffield is a very cheap place to live as a student, this has allowed me and friends to go out and spend a lot of time to get to know each other. Whether it was at a nightclub with cheap drinks, the many sports bars to watch football or the endless amounts of restaurants to choose from.

What’s important to you?

I believe it’s important to surround yourself with people that make you happy and you enjoy spending your time with. Since moving to uni I’ve made a lot of great mates who I believe fit that.

Why did you choose iQ?

I chose iQ as the location of the building was perfect. University, shops, restaurants, bars and night clubs are all within a 5-10 minute walk at most.

Would you recommend living at iQ?

I honestly enjoyed some of my nights at iQ the most since joining university. Fenton House has various amounts of space to relax with friends, such as the cinema room, games room, social area and gym. All of these providing a great opportunity to get to know my friends here without having to go out every night.

I’d recommend iQ not only for its location but also because of how well furnished their flats are and the varying social areas they provide.

From the day I moved in the staff were friendly and helpful. Helping me to move my bags in and always maintaining a smile on their face when you go into reception.

I took some of these whilst on a long walk exploring Sheffield. I found it interesting to see the variation that Sheffield had to offer, that being over countryside and the other of the city centre and heart of Sheffield. I found it nice that living here you are never too far away from the business of the city and the peacefulness of the country.

The other photos I have included are of me and friends during some of the parties or events we were going to. I found that trying out for a society was a great addition to joining university as it gives you an opportunity to dress up and have a lot of fun.
