Qingming Festival | How to celebrate at iQ

Spring is here, and with it comes Qingming Festival - a time for Chinese communities to honor their ancestors and enjoy the outdoors.  

Also known as Tomb-Sweeping Day, Qingming Festival is all about remembering and honoring your ancestors by visiting their graves, tidying them up and paying your respects. It's a great excuse to get outside and enjoy some springtime celebration. 

If you're a student living in the UK at iQ, we’ve come up with some ways that you can celebrate. 

1. Create a memorial corner 

Find a cozy corner in your accommodation where you set up a mini memorial for your ancestors. Throw down some cushions, light some candles and maybe put up some photos or mementos before you take a moment to pay your respects. 

2. Virtual hangouts 

Can't make it back home for Qingming?  Arrange a virtual get-together with your family and friends. Share stories, memories and maybe even do a virtual grave-sweeping session together. 

3. Head outdoors 

If the weather's nice, why not head outdoors? Take a stroll in the park, have a picnic with your mates, or you could even stay in the sweeping spirit and volunteer to pick up litter in your local area. It's a great way to enjoy the springtime vibes and honor the festival at the same time. 

4. Get creative in the kitchen 

Food is never a bad idea when it comes to celebrating. Get together with your flatmates and whip up some traditional Qingming dishes, including roast pork or chicken. Not only is it a tasty way to celebrate, but it's also a chance to bond over cooking.
