Realising resilience | Five steps to becoming a more determined person

 

The journey of self-discovery and becoming more determined can be a hard one. Determination is the key to achieving your goals and overcoming obstacles, but it can also feel like a big pair of shoes to fill, especially if you’re not quite sure what you want.  

This month at iQ is all about determination. So, here are five steps to becoming a more determined and resilient person that you can start right now.  

  

1. Figure out your thing 

What’s your thing? What drives you? Where do you wanna be?  

To be determined, you’ve got to have something you’re going after, whether that’s a dream, purpose or goal. Take some time to think about what you value, what your passions are and what you want now and in the future. Understanding that will help you stay committed.  

2. Set SMART goals 

If you set a big goal, it can be hard to know where to start. Break things up into SMART goals that are more easily achievable. A SMART goal is a target that’s Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Set clear milestones, write up the steps you need to do and track your progress to stay motivated along the way.   

3. Harvest a growth mindset 

You should see challenges as new opportunities to learn something and grow. By building a growth mindset, you’ll be able to persist longer in the face of adversity. Take every challenge as a chance to become a stronger, more determined version of yourself. 

4. Build consistent habits 

Consistency is the foundation of determination. Create a daily routine that helps you move forward towards your goals – having someone to hold you accountable at the start can help you get into the habit of making steps to achieve them.   

5. Think positive 

Your environment plays a huge role in shaping your mindset. Try to cut out negative self-talk and influences. Surround yourself with supportive friends, engage in activities that bring out your good side and expose yourself to motivational content.   

Becoming a more determined person is a journey that involves a lot of self-discovery and changing your habits. Think of determination as more than a part of someone’s personality – consider it a skill that you need to put time into to strengthen and feel natural with. Take small steps to start with and be consistent to build up towards full determination.
