Fire safety and security update

The safety and wellbeing of our residents and employees is iQ Student Accommodation’s number one priority.

At iQ our top priority is always to provide a safe and secure home away from home for students. We have a highly proactive approach to fire safety. Since 2017 we have undertaken a full and rigorous assessment of all our sites, including the fire safety measures that are in place.

All of our properties are confirmed as safe and fit for residential occupation by independent fire engineers, and have the appropriate fire safety measures in place. These include:

  • Smoke or heat detectors in every bedroom and kitchen and in some properties, depending on the building design, may also include sprinklers, wet risers and automatic smoke ventilation.
  • Fire detection systems in all of our buildings.
  • Staff on site 24/7 who are trained to be proactive in matters of fire safety, including how to respond to fire alerts, inductions for residents, regular building inspections, weekly bell tests and regular fire drills.
  • Fire alarms connected to a central monitoring service, via Red Care, in the vast majority of our buildings.

All our fire safety systems are subject to routine servicing and maintenance in accordance with British Standards and this is undertaken only by national contractors employing certified and qualified operatives. Our fire safety systems are inspected by external qualified risk assessors and audited by our own internal specialist health and safety officers on a regular basis to validate our fire safety systems, policies and procedures.

As a responsible landlord, we follow and act on government guidance, and proactively and routinely liaise with local Fire and Rescue Services. We set our own high standards of fire safety because our top priority is always to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our residents and employees.
