The University of Liverpool has a history of innovation. It was the first university in the world to offer courses in fields such as civic design, architecture, oceanography and biochemistry. More recently, in 2006 it became the first UK university to create a campus in China. With its 22,000 students on campus, it’s also one of the biggest in the UK. Subjects it excels in include veterinary science, in which it was named fifth-best in the world in 2017.
Its 100-acre campus is right next to the city centre and is built around the imposing red brick of its original building, which has been restored as the Victoria Gallery & Museum. There’s the unmissable design and lighting displays of the Active Learning Laboratory and the £23 million Central Teaching Hub with its state-of-the art teaching facilities. £600 million is being invested in current teaching, estate and research improvement programmes.
The Guild of Students — the name for its student union — was voted the best in the country by NUS members in 2016. The likes of Mac Demarco, Nelly, The Wombats, Paul Weller, Two Door Cinema Club and Sleaford Mods have all performed there, making it a key part of the city’s musical make-up. With over 200 student-run societies and opportunities for volunteering, there’s plenty of choice for extracurricular activity.
Right in the centre of town and just 8 minutes’ walk from campus, Great Newton House is the perfect base for students studying at Liverpool University and features its own outdoor terrace.
