FAQs

Make yourself at home

You’ve got questions, we’ve got answers. If there’s something you need to know, take a look at our iQ FAQs.

Can I send parcels in advance of my arrival?

Unfortunately we’ve only got limited storage space ahead of move in and your room might be occupied by another resident right now. To confirm whether your reception can accept any parcels on your behalf, get in touch with your local iQ team

My contract start date doesn’t work for me. Can I move in another day?

Sure – as long as you’ve paid your first instalment, you can move in on any date after your contract starts. When you complete your pre check-in, you can let us know your expected arrival date and time – this helps us make sure there’s someone there to welcome you when you arrive.

If you want to move in early, you’ll need to check this is possible by making an early arrival booking.

This way we can check that your room will be available when you want it. If you want to book an early arrival on short notice, it’s a good idea to notify your iQ team as well – contact details can be found here.

My uni has changed the move-in date. Can I arrive later?

Yes, you can let us know the new date of your arrival. Your contract dates will remain the same.

I’m struggling to pay my first rent instalment. What should I do?

If you’re having trouble paying, it’s worth talking to your guarantor first – that’s what they’re there for. In order to collect your key from your Tenancy Start Date you’ll be required to have paid any rent instalments that are due. If you need to talk about rent payments, please get in touch with your local iQ team. Contact details can be found here.

How do I contact the onsite team?

You can head to reception, reach out via the app, or call or email your site team directly. You can find their details here.

Remember there’s always someone available when you need us – emergency contact details can be found within the app and on posters around site after you’ve moved in.

Is there a calendar for social events?

On your iQ site Facebook page you’ll find the events calendar. See what’s planned by heading to our events page and selecting your location.

How can I meet new people?

You can connect with residents of your iQ site through its Facebook resident group, which you can find here. This is also a good place to get general updates from the team at your site.

iQ Clubs are another great way to meet residents from all over the country – you can join the BookClub, GamersClub or SupperClub here.

Is there internet access on site?

Yes, all our sites are equipped with WiFi, accessible throughout the building at no extra charge. This service is provided by our internet partners. If you have any issues connecting, you can find their contact details in the iQ app.

Does my iQ site have a laundry room?

Most of our sites have a laundry room where you can wash and dry your clothes. These are operated by an independent provider, Circuit Laundry or Miele. You will need to pay to use the machines via a top-up card or their mobile app.

How will I get my post/mail?

Your post will be delivered to a lockable post box for your flat or through the letterbox. Larger items or those that require a signature on delivery will be kept at Reception. We’ll let you know if there’s anything waiting for you via the iQ app. You can help keep our office tidy by collecting your parcels as soon as possible.

Will my flat be cleaned?

No, that’s down to you and your flatmates. We’ll keep the common areas of the building clean and tidy, like the social spaces, reception and laundry.

A lot of our residents put a rota together so each person in the flat does their bit to keep it clean.

Can I decorate my room?

We want your room to feel like it’s yours, but we also want to keep them looking good for you and the residents after you. We ask that you don’t paint, tape, stick or pin anything on the walls. Each room has a noticeboard for you to attach things to so you can make your room yours.

Can I have overnight guests?

Yes, it's your home so you can have guests staying over occasionally. All overnight guests should only stay in your room and for no more than 3 nights within a 7-day period. We would ask you to respect your fellow residents and let your flatmates know.  You’re responsible for the behaviour of any guests you bring to iQ.

Do I have to be home by a certain time each night?

No, it’s up to you when you come in. But if you are returning late at night, please respect your fellow residents and keep noise to a minimum between 11pm and 7am.

There's damage in the flat, will I be charged for it?

We know accidents can happen so it’s best to inform iQ staff right away.

Intentional damage to iQ property may incur a charge to residents. If there’s damage in communal areas, there will be equal charges to areas if no one accepts responsibility.

I’ve lost my keys – what do I do?

Let Reception know – you’ll need to buy a new key and/or fob. If it’s out of hours, show some photo ID to security and they’ll be able to give you access to your room.

Do I need to let you know if I go home for Christmas/Easter/the weekend?

You are free to stay through the entire length of your contract, but if you do go away it’s worth letting your iQ team know. If there was a fire or other serious incident while you’re away, we’ll know you’re safe.

Can I smoke within my room or accommodation generally?

While we do want you to feel at home, all our buildings are non-smoking for safety reasons. Cigarettes and e-cigarettes should be kept to the designated smoking areas outside. Please be careful not to smoke near other residents’ windows.

I don’t like my flatmates. Help!

Don’t panic, things may settle down. If there are specific issues, have a word with your iQ team and we’ll see if we can help resolve things. If things seem really bad, we might be able to offer you a different room (but there might be a small admin charge depending on the reasons for the move).

I don’t like it here. Can I cancel my contract?

If uni isn’t for you or you’re just not feeling at home with us, speak to your iQ team first. If you can find someone to take over your tenancy, you’re free to go (see our cancellation policy here).

If you’ve dropped out of university due to extenuating reasons (e.g. medical) you may be eligible for tenancy release. Each request is reviewed on a case by case basis and will require sufficient proof of the extenuating circumstance for consideration. There's no guarantee you’ll be released from your tenancy obligations. Please email Hello@iqstudentaccommodation.com to discuss.

If you're moving to a different university, we may be able to transfer you to a different iQ property - again, speak to your iQ team about this.
