Based in the heart of leafy educational hotspot Bloomsbury, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine is a research university and a constituent college of University of London (which accredits its degrees). Its mission is to help improve health worldwide through research, teaching, training and through informing policy and practice in those areas.
It has 4,000 students and 1,300 staff in over 100 countries. It was named first in the world for tropical medicine research in the Center for World University Rankings by Subject in 2017. In 2018, it was ranked sixth in the world for social sciences and public health by the US News Best Global Universities Ranking, and 21st in the world for medicine by QS in the same year.
Originally located in London's Docklands, it was founded by Charles F. Harford-Battersby, who mentored Ronald Ross, the man who won a Nobel Prize in 1897 for his discovery of the causes of the transmission of malaria. It conducts groundbreaking research to this day, and in recent years was awarded $37 million to test a new combination of HIV-prevention strategies in several African countries. It also offers free online courses which are studied by over 30,000 people worldwide.
Most of our London buildings are within a 30-minute journey to campus, but our Bloomsbury building is perfectly located for an easy lifestyle while studying at LSHTM. Just a few minutes' walk away, it makes for the perfect base.
